Learn why he is called Lance Corporal Crunch:
The nickname “Crunchies” (or just “Crunches”) for infantry in the Marine Corps comes from mechanized and armored units, particularly tankers and AAV (Amphibious Assault Vehicle) crews. The joke is pretty simple:
When dismounted grunts (infantry) are on foot, they’re seen as “soft targets” compared to vehicles. In a battlefield scenario, if a tank or an AAV moves through rough terrain, including an area where infantry is operating, there’s always the possibility of them getting run over—hence the sound “crunch” as if stepping on a bug.
The Joke Behind It:
• Tankers and AAV crews joke that if a grunt is in the way and doesn’t move fast enough, they might get turned into a “Crunchie” under the treads.
• Infantry, being foot-sloggers, are always in the dirt, while mechanized units roll past in their armored vehicles.
• It’s an ongoing rivalry where tankers and AAV drivers poke fun at the grunts for having to hump everywhere on foot, while they ride in style with armor and firepower.
Of course, infantry fires back by calling tankers “DATs” (Dumb-Ass Tankers) and making fun of how armor crews are useless without dismount support or how they can’t go anywhere without getting stuck or breaking down. The banter is all part of the love-hate relationship between different MOS communities in the Marine Corps.
At the end of the day, though, everyone knows the infantry is the backbone of the Marine Corps, and while tankers and AAV crews love to joke about “Crunchies,” they also know they’d be toast without the grunts clearing the way.
